How to make sure your Home reflects your personality
When someone enters your home they should get a good idea of the true personalities of the people who live there. After all “home is where the heart is” so it’s important to create a space where you can be relaxed and comfortable. Using the following tips will help guide you in having a home with decor and style that reflects the essence of who you are.
Avoid being a slave to trends
In recent years there has been a greater movement towards “fast interiors”. Similar to fast fashion in that we are encouraged to buy cheap interior accessories and constantly change decor and colour schemes to keep up with what we see on social media. Avoid getting sucked into this cycle and only include a trend in your home if it is something you really really like. Otherwise you will end up disliking the space after a very short time.
Put some thought into it
Sit down and think about what it is that you like/what interior style who identify most with. It’s also a good idea to think about what you really don’t like. Focus on colours, shapes, materials, textures, furniture styles etc. to get a good idea of what you’re looking for.
Colour
This deserves a mention by itself. Colour plays a huge part in interiors and it is the first thing we notice about anything. It affects our mood and needs serious thought to get right. Have a read of my blog on choosing the right colour scheme if you find it difficult.
Think unique
To avoid your home looking like a show-house you should include some antique or unusual items in it. They will add personality and interest to the space. Check out antique shops, secondhand shops, car boot sales and even online marketplaces to pick up lots of bargains.
Artwork
Hanging your favourite artwork and prints is one of the easiest ways to make sure your home reflects your personality. We all have different tastes in the type of art we like. It can be a good talking point when guests come over and will attract the eye.
Family photographs
Showing off family photographs or holiday snaps is another great way to introduce your own style. Photographs are always interesting to look at and usually have a story or memory attached to them.
Don’t rush!
Avoid buying items just for the sake of it because you feel under pressure to get a space completed. It usually means you waste money and end up with something you’re not fully happy with. Take your time and keep in mind decorating a home is a marathon not a sprint!
By using these tips I hope you will stand out from the crowd rather than blending in when it comes to interior design in your home. Don’t be afraid to show your true personality. It is your home after all!
