How to Set Up Your Home Office

Desk chair-invest in a good quality chair that has the correct support for your back especially your lower back. This will ensure you don’t end up slumping over your desk which can cause back, shoulder and neck problems.

Desk– ensure the desk you are using is at the correct height for you. The table should be high enough so that your elbows and underarms lie straight on the table. Don’t position your desk with your back to a window or the sun will shine directly on your computer screen causing eyestrain and glare.

Computer screen– the position of your monitor is very important. It should be placed slightly below the horizontal line of vision and be at least 1 arms length away. If using a laptop try and raise the height of it using, for example a pile of books or packs of printer paper.

Regular breaks– take regular breaks from the computer screen. Stand up and stretch or walk around the room. Look outside or away from your monitor every 20-30 minutes to give your eyes a break and avoid eyestrain.

Plants– bring nature into your home office and help clean the air by using plants such as Aloe Vera, Snake Plants, English Ivy and Spider Plants.

Personalise your space-surround yourself with personal objects that make your home office feel more happy. This will improve your mood and make working from home a more enjoyable experience. Why not print off and frame some of your favourite motivational quotes to keep you going through tough work days?

Be organised-keep clutter to a minimum using folders, desk tidy’s, paper trays etc. to reduce the stress involved in working in a small space. Having less clutter will leave you feeling calmer and ready to take on the day.
