1. Start a new tradition that involves the whole family

After the year we have had in 2020 we can appreciate the importance of family much more. Now is the time to start a new tradition that you can continue for years to come. Whether it’s baking cookies while listening to Christmas tunes, having a Christmas movie marathon in your pyjamas or going for a walk in the woods together. There’s so many options so pick one that works for you and your family and start creating memories.

2.Christmas decoration DIY

Get the kids involved in making simple Christmas decorations that they can use to decorate their bedrooms or the playroom. This will involve some mess no doubt but will be worth it for the fun involved. Ideas include making paper chains with coloured paper, painting pine cones etc. Pinterest is a valuable resource for ideas.

3.Scent of Christmas

If there’s one sure way to create the festive spirit in your home, it’s through our sense of smell. Take advantage of all the beautiful scented candles out there, especially from local makers and stock up for the Christmas season. Smells like cinnamon, pine, spiced orange and chestnut will fill your home with aromas bound to make you feel festive.

4.Light up your Home with Fairy lights

Nothing says Christmas like twinkly fairy lights. Apart from the obvious use for the Christmas tree you can also wrap them round the banister, add them to garlands or line the window to create a magical feeling in your home. You can also use them outdoors on tress and large shrubs to make your garden extra festive.

5.Display your Christmas cards

We love the tradition of writing and sending cards to our nearest and dearest. When you receive them there’s lots of places you can showcase your cards apart from the traditional mantlepiece. Weave some ribbon down the banister and use small wooden pegs to attach the cards to it. Why not pop them into photo frames for unique DIY Christmas decor. Seeing the cards every day will help foster those warm fuzzy Christmas feelings.

6.Bring nature into your home

Why not create your own decorations or garlands for the mantlepiece? Or maybe  a wreath for the door. Centrepieces for the table on Christmas Day look great made from fresh foliage surrounded by candles. Festive plants like holly, ivy and poinsettia’s bring colour and texture to your festive decor. Bring the whole family with you while foraging for suitable items. It’s a great way to tire energetic kids out and get fresh air at the same time.

7.Light the fire

Open fires are a must at Christmas to create a cosy atmosphere. Snuggling up with your family, watching Christmas movies and drinking hot chocolate….Bliss! Make your fireplace a focal point in your room with a garland or suitable decorations to catch the eye. Don’t forget to add the Christmas stockings on Christmas Eve once the fire is out!

8.Sing-Along to Christmas songs

Why not have a karaoke-style sing-along with your family to your favourite Christmas songs. Kids love to sing and dance so it’s a great idea for an afternoon of fun & games. Add in some sweet treats and you’re guaranteed to create festive cheer all round.

9.Festive furnishings

Change the cushion covers on the sofa to festive themed ones to instantly update the room atmosphere. Add some soft throws to the side to encourage relaxed and cosy vibes while watching TV and Christmas movies. You can also use festive bedding in the bedrooms to continue with the magical mood.

10.Bake some sweet treats

Whether it’s cookies or gingerbread figures or even the good old rice krispie bun, baking is a fun activity that the whole family can get involved in. Decorate them with festive designs using food colouring, jelly babies, sprinkles,  marshmallows or whatever else takes your fancy. Kids love to help especially with adding the decorations. Hours of fun guaranteed!
